How Can Liz Warren Possibly Beat Scott Brown?

elizabeth warren

She’s not particularly popular with Democrats, her campaign thus far has been “Marcia-Coakley-esque” in its ineptitude, and the one thing most people know about her is that she’s a fake Indian.

So how can Liz Warren beat Scott Brown? Two words:

Brute force.

SEIU funding massive community organizing GOTV push in Massachusetts

The largest SEIU PAC in Massachusetts has just filed it’s pre-primary report. They have spent over $134,000 on Massachusetts elections and organizing this year and have over $400,000 cash on hand. In addition to donating to progressive candidates and the Massachusetts Democratic Party, they have also donated $55,000 to two community organizing groups.

On May 10, 2012 the SEIU 1199 PAC donated $20,000 to the "Coalition for Social Justice" of Fall River. The Coalition for Social Justice, according to the corporate database at the Secretary of State’s Office is a 501(c)4 social welfare organization. According to the Secretary of State they were issued an "involuntary revocation" of their status in June of 2012 (RMG will contact the Secretary of State to see what that means on Monday).

Regardless of their legal status the Coalition for Social Justice is working towards knocking on 36,000 doors in the urban areas of the South Coast.

This is just one union, one PAC and one town. Expand this level of money and manpower across the state, and it’s possible that Democrats could defeat the candidate most Massachusetts residents want, by churning out machine-driven votes from uninformed/disinterested people showing up to pull the ‘D’.

For example—and I know this is gonna sound crazy—what if the state Welfare Dept. sent every welfare resident a voter registration with paid return postage under the orders of the governor, after the governor’s wife’s lawfirm sued to “force” him to do so? 487,000 potential registered voters—many of whom have little or no interest in politics.

Then—just thinking out loud—paid union operatives and city/town employees follow-up with that list of new voters to send a car or van around to take each one to the polls. After handing them a “Remember that letter from your Democratic governor about your welfare checks from a Democratic legislature, supported with stimulus money from your Democratic president?” flier, tens of thousands of these voters are dropped off at the polls to (ahem) “vote their conscience.”

Don’t think it can happen? Folks, in 2010—with a national tidal wave of Republican victories breaking—the Democratic machine got a woman elected State Auditor who had no experience and had been caught cheating on her taxes. And her opponent was…AN ACTUAL AUDITOR.

Every Republican above the level of state rep lost in 2010 here in Massachusetts. Thanks to brute political force.

Warren doesn’t need to “win.” She just needs the union/paid government workers machine to deliver the votes.  In fact, the only way Scott Brown can win is if the citizens organize themselves and fight back.

The will of the people doesn’t decide elections. Ballots do.

Natural Truth of the Day

For several months now, whenever the topic of enrollment in the Affordable Care Act came up, I've been saying that it was too soon to tell its ultimate effects. We don't know how many people have paid for their new insurance policies, or how many of those who bought policies were previously uninsured. For that, I said, we will have to wait for Census Bureau data, which offer the best assessment of the insurance status of the whole population... I stand corrected: These data won't be available at all. Ever.-- Megan McArdle, Bloomberg View.
