As fiscal reality begins to penetrate even the protected palisades of the government unions, their leadership is lashing out. In Providence, the school system informed every teacher that it’s possible they will not be re-hired for next year. It’s not that they’re actually going to be fired—the school system is merely meeting the legal demand that notice be sent by March 1st.
“Let’s create the most chaos and the highest level of anxiety in a district where teachers are already under unbelievable stress. Now I know how the United States State Department felt on Dec. 7 , 1941.”
And the Providence Journal, realizing that most of their readers were educated by Smith’s public school colleagues, wisely adds the following helpful note:
That was the day the Japanese government bombed Pearl Harbor.
Thanks for clearing THAT up...
My message for all the government workers out there riding the “USS Teachers Union Titanic” is that these current conflicts are just the tip of the iceberg. This fiscal fiasco isn’t just going to go away. Deal with it now, it wait for it to get even worse later.
Oh,. and for all you ProJo readers, the Titanic was a ocean liner that sank after hitting an iceberg in 1912.

"The truth is something [Warren] probably prefers not to confront. Harvard doesn’t come calling just because you’re a smart lawyer and a terrific teacher — not with Warren’s modest, Oklahoma upbringing and non-Ivy League education. She is not your typical Harvard professor. At a certain point, when the law school was under pressure to promote diversity, she represented a three-fer: a great lawyer with a national profile, a woman, and a minority, at least by virtue of family lore.
