I’ll be honest. I thought the sheer lunacy of the “Welcome Gitmo Detainees” proposal, along with the mocking media coverage would be enough to shame the Amherst Town Meeting into voting down this article. But once again they’ve reminded us all:
No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American liberal.
AMHERST - Captives long held by the United States at Guantanamo Bay could be welcome to move to Amherst.
Town Meeting Wednesday called on Congress to repeal the ban on allowing cleared detainees to live in the United States and then moved to invite two such detainees, once cleared, to come to Amherst.
The petition article, brought forward by Pioneer Valley No More Guantanamos, won widespread support from Town Meeting.
Meg Gage of Precinct 1 spoke in favor of the article. "The cruelty carried out at Guantanamo has been well documented," Gage said.
Gage said Town Meeting's support is essential to both national integrity and personal accountability because of the unjust imprisonment of more than 800 people.
Gage calls it "consistent with Amherst's tradition of welcoming refugees from other parts of the world and building bridges of understanding between Amherst and many far-away places" and noting the support western Massachusetts once gave to the Underground Railroad for those fleeing slavery, and now gives to exiled Tibetans.
“Unjust imprisonment?” “Tradition of welcoming refugees [like] the Underground Railroad,” aka. “slavery?” Nice to know what the town of Amherst thinks of our US soldiers fighting these Islamist extremists in the Middle East and guarding them at Guantanamo Bay.
With the “NYC’s most prolific bomber” on his way to UMass-Amherst next week (at taxpayer’s expense) to re-live the United Freedom Front’s days blowing up Bostonians and killing NJ cops, Amherst is working hard to make itself America’s favorite terrorist hang out! Maybe when that Islamist in Sudbury, MA who wanted to shoot up a local shopping mall gets out, they can vote to invite him over, too!
And remember: this is the same town that finds the American Flag too offensive to welcome.
The Democrats are going to get beaten badly in November. Not just because the economy is ailing. And not just because Obama overread his mandate in governing too far left. But because a comeuppance is due the arrogant elites whose undisguised contempt for the great unwashed prevents them from conceding a modicum of serious thought to those who dare oppose them.
