Brookline legal residents who aren’t U.S. citizens could secure the right to vote in local elections, if Town Meeting members and state lawmakers back a proposal filed by the town’s school committee chairwoman.
Rebecca Stone, a Town Meeting member from Precinct 3 and chairwoman of the School Committee, said the proposal is a “positive way” to push back against anti-immigrant attitudes at the state and national level.
“Rather than simply condemning what we don’t like and saying this is a terrible thing, maybe there is something we can do in Brookline that [shows] we have a different attitude toward immigrants,” said Stone.
How perfect is it that Ms. Stone is the chairwoman of the School Committee? Oh, and did you pick up on the underlying bigotry in Brookline? Only “legal residents who aren’t US citizens” will be given the franchise. So is Ms. Stone going to demand to see the papers of these non-citizens? Will she turn an “undocumented American” away from the Brookline ballot box?

"The truth is something [Warren] probably prefers not to confront. Harvard doesn’t come calling just because you’re a smart lawyer and a terrific teacher — not with Warren’s modest, Oklahoma upbringing and non-Ivy League education. She is not your typical Harvard professor. At a certain point, when the law school was under pressure to promote diversity, she represented a three-fer: a great lawyer with a national profile, a woman, and a minority, at least by virtue of family lore.
