We have elected a gutless coward to be our president.
The 9/11 families are being torn apart by the insistence of Hamas-friendly Muslims to build a mosque at the 9/11 graveyard—a mosque these “sensitive, dialogue-building” Muslims hope to open on the 10th anniversary of the worst Islam-inspired terror attack in the US.
So far.
By a more than 2-1 margin, Americans oppose this insulting disgrace. Americans are genuinely hurt and horrified by it. We look to our leader to speak on our behalf, and what do we get?
Classic Barack Obama. Instead of stepping up and leading on this important issue, he cowers down behind the pages of the Constitution and hides, hoping the problem will just go away.
As a citizen, and as President, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country. And that includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in Lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances.
FDR gave us “We have nothing to fear but fear itself!”
Reagan gave us “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”
And Barack Obama? “In accordance with local laws and ordinances.”
Now THAT’S leadership.
Obtuse O-bots claim that President Obama said the only thing he could say. The “ordinances” are clear—what else can he do?
Yes, let’s imagine for a moment what a real president might have said last night at a White House iftar dinner:
“As an American, I agree that the Cordoba Institute has the legal right on private property to build a mosque at Ground Zero. But as the president of the nation whose dead in the War on Terror still lie there—their remains scattered among the very dust and dirt itself—I must ask Muslims of good will to respect this sacred soil. Just as it would be wrong to say that the 9/11 terrorists represent all of Islam, it is wrong to deny that Islam has a connection to that terrible act unlike any other faith.
I do not know the motives of the individuals who want to build this mosque. I am not questioning their reasons, nor am I supporting them. I am simply asking them to have the human decency to respect our nation’s loss and move their mosque to another site—a site among the 100 other mosques that already exist in New York. And none of which were attacked in the immediate aftermath of 9/11.
That fact proves the tolerance and good will of the American people, who have not lashed out against Muslim neighbors or even Muslim strangers visiting here in America. We absolutely defend the right to build this mosque. Now I, as president of the United States, am urging our Muslim neighbors not to use this right to do something so wrong.
Show us that you share our tolerance and sensitivity by not building this mosque. And if the individuals building this mosque will not, then I urge the millions of decent Muslims around the world to reach out to the Cordoba Institute and urge them to stop.”
That’s the kind of speech that, in my imagination, a leader would give.
But we don’t have a leader. We have Barack “I vote present” Obama.
There was a particularly nauseating moment when President Obama called Ground Zero “hallowed ground.” Well, what does “hallowed” mean if it doesn’t mean “ground that we treat with more deference and sensitivity than other places?” He clearly doesn’t see the ground as “hallowed.” He supports treating it like any other intersection in America.
Even worse is the tone of his speech (see video above). He’s clearly angry and annoyed by those of us who oppose the mosque. He’s not saying “Hey—this idea sucks, but the law’s the law—what can I do?” President Obama said last night that the mosque BELONGS at Ground Zero, and that there’s something wrong (“This is America!”) with those of us who oppose it.
President Obama has gone beyond “laws and ordinances.” He thinks the Cordoba imam is the good guy, and 68% of the American people are the bad guys.
Barack has found the enemy and, as usual, it’s us. As in “the U.S.”
UPDATE: The 9/11 Families are speaking out on the President’s support for the 9/11 mosque.
Barack Obama has abandoned America at the place where America’s heart was broken nine years ago, and where her true values were on display for all to see. Since that dark day, Americans have been asked to bear the burden of defending those values, again and again and again. Now this president declares that the victims of 9/11 and their families must bear another burden. We must stand silent at the last place in America where 9/11 is still remembered with reverence or risk being called religious bigots.
UPDATE UPDATE: If you haven’t read Charles Krauthammer’s total beatdown of the Left’s gutlessness re: the mosque—read it now!

"The truth is something [Warren] probably prefers not to confront. Harvard doesn’t come calling just because you’re a smart lawyer and a terrific teacher — not with Warren’s modest, Oklahoma upbringing and non-Ivy League education. She is not your typical Harvard professor. At a certain point, when the law school was under pressure to promote diversity, she represented a three-fer: a great lawyer with a national profile, a woman, and a minority, at least by virtue of family lore.
